Ascent Solar appoints Dr. Farhad Moghadam as CEO

THORNTON, USA: Ascent Solar Technologies Inc., a developer of state of the art flexible thin-film solar modules, announced the appointment of Dr. Farhad Moghadam as the company's President and Chief Executive Officer.

The appointment will become effective August 3, 2009. Dr. Moghadam brings to Ascent Solar extensive senior executive experience in global operations, business development and commercialization of complex, state-of-the-art technologies.

Dr. Moghadam most recently served as Senior Vice President and General Manager at Applied Materials, Inc., where, among other things, he led the Thin Films Product Group, Applied's largest business unit, and was responsible for managing over 1,100 Applied employees in the US, Europe and Asia. He also served on the board of directors of Sokudo Co. Ltd. Before joining Applied, Dr. Moghadam held management positions at Intel.

He received his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Stanford University. He has authored over 250 publications and is a named inventor on approximately 65 patents. Since 2007, Dr. Moghadam has been engaged with prominent private equity firms, and he recently assisted companies seeking to participate in the US Department of Energy loan guarantee program with independent engineering assessments and bankability evaluations.

Welcoming Dr. Moghadam, Ascent Solar's founder and Chairman Dr. Mohan Misra stated: “Ascent Solar is moving rapidly on many business fronts, and we expect that the addition of Dr. Moghadam to lead our company will help us meet the challenges associated with the rapid growth we see ahead. After an extensive search lasting nine months, we are delighted that Dr. Moghadam has chosen to become Ascent Solar's new President and CEO.

"Dr. Moghadam possesses an impressive track record at Applied and Intel in shaping and building the businesses of those leading companies. We are confident that Ascent Solar will benefit significantly from Dr. Moghadam’s outstanding, broad based qualifications and experience."

“Ascent Solar is among a very few PV companies which has proven technology ready for high volume manufacturing of CIGS PV material on a plastic substrate,” said Dr. Moghadam.

“There are two key constraints in solar industry today --- efficiency and cost. I believe that Ascent Solar, through extensive process development and characterization, has a unique product ready for scale-up. I am excited about joining the company and to be part of the team to grow and establish Ascent Solar as a leader in the market for lightweight, flexible PV modules.”

Malibu opens first green TFPV fab using Linde’s fluorine technology

MUNICH/OSTERWEDDINGEN, GERMANY: Delivering a major step forward in sustainable solar power, Malibu today launched the world’s first thin-film solar module factory that completely eliminates the use of nitrogen trifluoride (NF3), a greenhouse gas with a significant global warming potential, from the manufacturing process.

Working in close collaboration with researchers from technology provider Linde Gases, a division of The Linde Group, scientists at Malibu’s development centre in Bielefeld, Germany, have developed an improved cleaning process using on-site generated fluorine (F2) made with Linde’s patented technology.

As a result, the carbon payback time –- the time it takes the use of solar panels to offset the environmental impact of their manufacture –- is reduced by up to one year. This improved process will now be rolled out to their new 40MW production facility in Osterweddingen, Germany.

Dean O’Connor, Head of Market Development & Technology at Linde Gases Division, said: “Linde and Malibu have clearly demonstrated their leadership and foresight in helping the thin-film PV industry to reach a watershed moment. Green energy will only be truly green when the entire supply and manufacturing chain works together to minimise environmental impact.”

According to Konrad Kaiser, General Manager Malibu: “Not only does the F2 cleaning process eliminate a major source of potential greenhouse gas emissions for our thin-film solar panels, it also speeds our processing and uses less material. This improves the overall sustainability of our product by reducing both environmental impact and manufacturing costs.”

In 2008, Linde and Malibu established their Joint Development Programme for the development of advanced material technology to improve cell efficiency, throughput and yield. F2 cleaning is the first of a number of material-based processes to emerge from their successful collaboration. NF3 and other fluorine compounds, such as sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), are used to clean the process tools that make the important silicon photovoltaic layers in thin-film solar modules.

Linde to supply supply high purity gases to Italy’s first thin-film solar cell plant

MUNICH, GERMANY: Linde Gases, a division of The Linde Group, announced that it has been awarded the exclusive contract to supply high purity gases to Italy’s first thin-film solar module manufacturing plant. The Moncada Energy Group s.r.l., a leading private producer of renewable energy in Italy, is building the plant in Campofranco (Sicily).

Under this agreement, Linde Gas Italia, a member of The Linde Group, will provide Moncada with turnkey installation of the plant’s bulk and specialty gases supply systems. On an ongoing basis, it will also deliver nitrogen (N2), hydrogen (H2), silane (SiH4) and chamber cleaning gases which are essential to making thin-film solar cells.

“Linde Gas Italia is excited to partner with Moncada to expand Italy's growing infrastructure of renewable energy installations,” said Fabrizio Elia, CEO of Linde Gas Italia. “Our collaboration with Moncada echoes our commitment to deliver innovative environmentally friendly processes, and it also builds on our aim to make solar energy more affordable for mass consumption –- at par with the grid.”

Linde was selected based on its proven supply capability and strong global market position in turnkey solutions for thin-film solar module manufacturing. Its established R&D programme, which is focused on reducing production costs and delivering environmentally friendly solutions, was also key to the contract win. Linde has developed a process that can replace the powerful greenhouse gas nitrogen trifluoride (NF3) with pure fluorine (F2), which does not contribute to global warming.

Moncada’s thin-film PV plant in Campofranco, which becomes fully-operational in 2010, will produce large 5.7m2 single junction photovoltaic modules. The facility is expected to have an annual output capacity of 40MWp.

“Moncada’s mission is to enable the environmentally friendly and cost-effective production and installation of solar panels. Linde’s proven technology expertise mirrors our ambition to quickly achieve grid parity in Italy,” said Salvatore Moncada, CEO and founder of Moncada Energy Group. “Partnering with experts from The Linde Group and Applied Materials, Moncada is firmly placed to fuel the boom phase for renewable energy in Italy.”

Linde is the leading supplier of fluorine, producing it on-site, on-demand and at very low pressures. Developed in the late 1990s, this proven technology has been installed at more than 20 semiconductor, LCD and solar cell production sites, including Toshiba Matsushita Display, Samsung, and LG.
